Hi, I’m Monica. Things You’ll Love is where I share what I’m collecting: books, music, recipes, slow rituals, and minor wonders. Think of it as my kitchen table. You’re always welcome here.
Hey everyone!
Hey hey folks! It’s been a few weeks, and that’s on me for not being far enough ahead with drafting these for my VA. Since I wrote you last, my brother got married (!!) to his HUSBAND, and we celebrated joyfully. I’m so happy to have expanded our family officially.
Something to watch
My foster kid and I were looking for movies to watch on a Friday night, and they insisted we watch this.
Over the Moon tells the story of a young girl, Fei Fei, whose mother dies in the first 10 minutes of the movie. Within a few years, the father is dating someone with an (annoying) son, and Fei Fei is not here for it. The story deftly weaves in the story of the Moon Goddess and looks at grief, memory, and more. It’s definitely going on my list of grief resources to share with folks.
Something to bake
If you haven’t made bread before, and you’re curious to try, this is maybe the easiest intro I know. A few years before COVID, I stumbled onto this recipe and was smitten, immediately.
A friend of mine had made weekly bread for years and I wanted to try, but their instructions for letting something sit out overnight and what to do with the dough weekly with regularity felt like too much to tackle.
So I put it off for years and years and years.
Until I found this recipe, where you basically combine water, salt, yeast, and flour and let it sit overnight. It just sits on your counter.
Easy peasy.
It tastes almost like sourdough, but without all the extra layers of steps.
Something to stir hope:
In this world, I feel like even more than ever, we need hope to hold on to. When this first came out, I remember thinking how cool it was, but watching it in action here, was even better.
Something I’m Exploring
With everything going on, some folks feel better being prepared in case of catastrophe, ongoing collapse, etc. Jessica Wildfire (not her real name) has worked really hard to compile an illustrated guide to everything you need to know for surviving.
She’s very matter of fact, and everything is research-based on her own experience.
Bonus: something for cleaning
I postpone maintenance on my car WAY longer than I should. And while I mostly use varieties of natural cleaners, this particular LA’S TOTALLY AWESOME cleaner is unrivaled for cleaning brake rust from your tire hubs.
My tires look nearly brand new —and before they were black/brown with caked-on rust. Spray these, leave it, use a wire brush, and with a few go’s at it, the rust is (mostly) gone.
That’s all from me this week! See y’all soon.
